A dramatic incident unfolded on January 28, around 10:50 p.m., when a car theft was reported from the Wawa gas station on West Silver Springs Blvd. The victim’s vehicle, once stolen, was later spotted in motion, prompting a pursuit initiated by OPD Officer Burleigh, commencing near the 2100 block of West Silver Springs Blvd.
The fleeing car reached speeds of approximately 60 mph as Officer Burleigh pursued it through the city streets. The chase culminated in a crash in the 700 block of SW 24th Ave, Ocala. Following the collision, law enforcement quickly established a perimeter to contain the suspects.
Assistance from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Air-1 and OPD K9 Officer Prather, alongside his partner, K9 Graham, played a crucial role in tracking down the suspects in the nearby wooded area. Jahaziel Velez Olmo, 28, and Karlamaris Izarry Rivera, 24, were successfully apprehended.
Rivera, identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle, faces a slew of charges, including fleeing and eluding, grand theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, resisting without violence, and driving without a license. Velez Olmo, on the other hand, was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and resisting without violence.
Both suspects, treated for their injuries sustained during the arrest, were subsequently transported to Marion County Jail. The incident highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in swiftly resolving and apprehending individuals involved in criminal activities.
