Inmate trained dogs: The ‘FIDO Project’ celebrates man’s best friend

Missi Sig

On Saturday, February 3, 2024, The FIDO Project and the Marion County Animal Services teamed up at Mr Mochas Pet Supplies at 11761 SE US Highway 441 in Belleview from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM to show off their newest graduates of The FIDO Project, which stands for Florida Inmate And Dog Obedience.

The FIDO Project had a total of 6 dogs available for adoption. The dogs are all crate trained and know basic commands. The dogs live with the prisoners for 8 weeks, in that time, the prisoners train the dogs under the supervision of Procyon Dog Training in Ocala. It’s a great experience for the inmate and the dog. The inmate keeps a journal about his dog and it tells the new owners important details about the dog, and it clearly shows a bond between the inmate and his dog.

The $50 adoption fee includes sterilization, vaccines, county license and microchip. The FIDO Project operates on donations, except for the initial sheltering cost, there is no budget for training or supplies except what is received through donations.

For more information on a future adoption event or to donate something from The FIDO Projects wish list, please visit the website at Marionfl.org/FIDO
