Ocala Shocked by Fatal Shooting: Stand Your Ground Investigation Unfolds

A chilling shooting incident sent shockwaves through the 2700 block of SW 143rd Place Road in Ocala on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, around 4:40 p.m. Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies swiftly responded to the scene, discovering John’L Davis (B/M, DOB: 04/19/1997), a black male, who had been shot.

Upon arrival, deputies initiated life-saving measures, including CPR, while awaiting the arrival of Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR). The victim was promptly transported to the hospital in critical condition. Despite the immediate and diligent efforts, Davis tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect, who had remained on the scene, was apprehended by MCSO deputies upon their arrival. Major Crimes detectives took charge of the investigation, conducting interviews with the suspect. Following the suspect’s interview, he was released, with the shooting currently being probed as a possible Stand Your Ground incident.

The case remains under the intense scrutiny of Major Crimes detectives, who are collaborating closely with the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office. The unfolding investigation seeks to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and determine the legal implications of the shooting.
