Small Town, Big Fight: Weirsdale Residents Protest High-Density Housing Plan

In the little town of Weirsdale, where the population hovers just under 3,000, residents are gearing up for a battle to preserve their historical atmosphere. The ‘Stop Grand Oaks’ group has organized an awareness ride scheduled for April 6th at 10:30 am, starting from Cottom’s Farm off Marion County Rd and concluding at the entrance of Grand Oaks Resort.

The ride will feature a procession of horses, haywagons, golf carts, walkers and runners.

The reason for their protest? Grand Oaks Resort’s proposed development plan, which aims to transform the 400-acre equestrian oasis into a high-density housing complex comprising 800 mobile homes.

Despite Lake County Commissioners rejecting the proposal in 2023, the resort’s owner, billionaire Tom Golisano, has shifted focus to Lady Lake Township for annexation and rezoning.

Residents fear the influx of mobile homes will overwhelm Weirsdale’s infrastructure, particularly at the intersection of C25 and Hwy 42, already heavily congested with daily commuters. With no measures in place to accommodate the surge in population and traffic, locals are rallying fellow residents to attend Lady Lake commissioner meetings and oppose the development.
